Sr. M. Emilie was born on February 6, 1893. Throughout her life she helped many people and did so much good that the process for her beatification is already well advanced today. Even 70 years after her death, she continues to have an effect. Anyone who has ever been “in the hole” knows this feeling: suddenly everything seems darker, heavier, and without a way out. Then the image of the staircase can help us: out, upward, moving on.
On February 8, Emilie Engel was baptized. Her baptismal day reminds me: my dignity does not depend on what I achieve, how others treat me, or what they say about me. My dignity comes from the fact that Christ died and rose again for me—and that I am baptized into him.
M. Emilie recounts that she was often afraid and discouraged. As a child, she even hid under the stairs. Later she learned to look each day for the “signs of light”: moments of goodness, signs of God’s closeness. This brightens the soul and gives strength.
