My name is Sister M. Kleta, and I have been here on Mount Schönstatt since 1960. From 1961 to 1963, I completed my apprenticeship in horticulture.
Sister M. Kleta is responsible for maintaining much of the outdoor grounds on Mount Schönstatt. Together with the sisters and staff members who have been part of the team over the years, she coordinated the landscaping. In the past, cows and pigs were also kept on the mountain to help provide food for the community.
Things have changed since then. Today we still maintain the outdoor areas with fruit trees—apples, plums, mirabelle plums, cherries, sour cherries, and sweet cherries—and, above all, flowers. Several of the houses here on the mountain are supplied with flowers from our gardens.
Even today, I am responsible for ordering seeds, sowing them, pricking out seedlings, potting plants, and doing special work in the greenhouse. And then, whatever I am still able to do outdoors, I do as well.
Harvest time is always especially important. There is often a great deal of work, but we always manage it, and we are happy that we have our own produce and can provide for ourselves, at least in part.
Our work depends very much on the weather. We are often surprised by heavy rain or by periods of drought, which have become much more frequent than they used to be. That is what our work here on Mount Schönstatt is like.
I am very happy that, even after all these years, I am still able to contribute in some way and continue working in the beautiful natural surroundings here on Mount Schönstatt.
